  1. About Necrons:

I have watched every battle report I can possibly watch so far and the general consensus amongst all these players is scarab's seem to be in every list. I am still not sure why because every time I see them they get into close combat and sure they are hard to take down but they feel like plague marines and just don't get the job done. As for building a list all together, it seems tough. One bad choice I feel can take down your entire army no matter which slot it may be a part of. I also wouldn't understand any army that wouldn't take res. orbs as part of their HQ'a slot because the amount of rezing that necrons get is already insane at 5+. Going all the way to 4+ on this seems like the army is neigh invincible and you can easily recover at least 300-400 points at the 1500 level and even greater at high point costs.

  2. I admit I think I'm undervaluing the res orb, especially in units beyond warriors (or even immortals). What concerns me about the list is not its resilience, but its problem with taking down enough of an enemy army to clear objectives. As fast as some of the necron lists out there can be, they're still relying on relatively static, walking units with no cc potential (beyond character add-ons) to take objectives and secure table zones. As great as their support units are, I don't see how they can reliably put forth enough firepower to take down things that are built to take punishing shooting without dying (like plague marines). I've had my share of games trying to take objectives with 10 or 15 marines equipped with basic weaponry; there's a reason every squad you see nowadays has a power fist.

Then again, I'm one of the many players used to wiping the floor with whole necron squads at a time in the assault phase with no possibility of WBB, so I can concede that I might be undervaluing the reanimation protocol as a whole, instead of simply the benefit of having a rez orb.

As to scarabs, I'm torn. They're insanely vulnerable to high strength blast weapons, but otherwise seem fine - I just wouldn't take them because they don't fit my playstyle and, until I see them in action, I can't quantify them in my head. What kinds of lists are you seeing specifically/are there any particular battles you can link that you thought were well fought?

  3. Heres an example video: http://www.miniwargaming.com/content/necrons-vs-tyranids-warhammer-40k-battle-report-part-14-beat-matt-batrep . The whole problem with battle reports as it stands right now, I have not seen a single good battle yet. Every Necron player/list just comes off as extremely underwhelming, but for all I know that could be the entire army but I doubt it.

Scarabs once again to me are just straight up plague marine style of just sitting there in close combat and seems to waste your time in assault because they are tough as nails to kill but simply, in my opinion, do 0 damage worth mentioning on the battle field.

I can see your point on just having enough raw killing power but I think the hidden gem in the codex may be the praetorians in being able to dish out the hurt. Granted they still aren't the crazy unit everyone will jump to, far from it, but I think they can lay down a big enough hurt to scare anyone once combat is resolved.

  4. I absolutely agree. Triarchs are the best unit in that codex imo. After watching that batrep, I was surprised to see such an oldstyle list. Matt's a good tyranid player, and - while his list for this game wasn't nearly optimized - beating him is something people should be proud of at any point level, as long as he's piloting nids. I would discount the whole game due to pyrovorelol, but after watching the vid, that thing was the luckiest PoS ever, and did what it was designed(??!) to do, despite 4/6 reanimators.

As far as the "crazy" unit potential of lychgaurd, I think a rez orb makes them the hammer unit players will expect but, in the end, are they worth the points?
